Promotional slogans of the One-child policy in China’s countryside

The family planning policy, better known as the one-child policy, has been set as China’s basic state policy since 1980. For the past decades, China’s countryside has been the most heavily-affected area. To maintain low birth rate and meet statistic requirements, local family planning officials have tried their best to come up with catchy slogans. Starting from 2007, China initiated the “Eraser” project to clear up these cold-blooded slogans and promote more humane ones. Nevertheless, many of these old slogans are well kept in people’s hearts. Below, Netease has collected a few of the slogans.

Pull it out! Abort it! Induce it! Anything but to give birth to it!

“But to” was changed into “but not to.”

We’d rather allow blood to flow like a river than to allow an excess child to be born.

“Excess” was changed into “one less.”

Have fewer children and plant more trees. Have fewer children and raise more pigs.

One family to have an excess child, the whole village will be sterilized.

Inducing labor! Abortion! Anything but to have an excess baby born!

To report excess pregnancy or childbirth will be rewarded.

To have a second or more children means to lose all possessions and family fortunes.

Summer is the high point for birth control.

“Control” was crossed off.

If don’t abort what should be aborted, house will be torn down and cows taken.

Intense crackdown on those who hide away and give birth to excess children. You can hide for now but you cannot hide forever.

Today, you escape from the one-child policy. When you come back, you will lose all you have.

To build an all-around town where no child is born in excess of what the police allows and where no one escapes to give birth outside of the town.

Vaginal ring after the first child. Sterilization after the second child. Those with excess pregnancy will get abortion and be sterilized. Those with excess children will be sterilized and fined.

Women of child-bearing age will get 2-yuan subsidization for vaginal ring check-up.

Implement family planning policies by law. Effectively control population growth.

Vaginal ring after the first child. Sterilization after the second child.

Sons and daughters are the same. Daughters are prominent descendants, too.

Due to heavy reliance on labor for a living in the countryside and the tradition of relying on sons for old age, many Chinese in rural areas would keep getting children until they have a son. What’s worse, to comply with the one-child policy, many would throw away or even kill newborn girls just to have another chance of pregnancy for a boy.

Call back those who escaped. Dig out those who hid away. Abort babies in excess of what the policy allows. Sterilize those who deserve.

For those who should receive but reject vaginal ring and sterilization operations, arrest at first sight.

Arrest those who should but refuse to be sterilized. Tear down houses and take away possessions from those who should but refuse to abort.

One and a half child policy. No more children allowed if already have a boy. Wait 4 years to have another child if giving birth to a girl.

Late marriage and late pregnancy are encouraged. Have fewer but better children.

Husbands also share the responsibilities of birth control.

Get pregnant only after acquiring pregnancy permit. Give birth only after acquiring birth certificate.

600 yuan reward and financial aid. To show love of the family planning policy.
