China’s first lady Peng Liyuan is using an iPhone 5

Has China’s first lady read about PRISM and NSA’s backdoor into Apple? Not sure. Today, a picture of Xi Jingping and his celebrity wife Peng Liyuan during their visit to Mexico’s Chichen Itza in the city of Tinum shows very clearly that Peng is using an iPhone, most likely an iPhone 5.

The picture is going viral on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like social media platform. Chinese netizens, who still vividly remembered how China’s Central TV has gone after Apple earlier this year for bad customer service, now jokingly dared CCTV to challenge Apple ever again, because it’s the phone used by “our first lady.” Others thought this may be the exact reason why CCTV chose to attack Apple – the US company may have failed to provide satisfying customer service to Peng.

Either way, this is probably the best advertising Apple could dream of in China, though it comes at a very inconvenient time with all the spying news going on.
