“Bitches, welcome to college!” Back to school in China

Colleges and universities in China have a tradition to use slogans and banners to send welcoming messages to freshmen. 10 years ago, first-year college students in China would start their 4-year education with encouragements that ranged from semi-Maoist ones like “Work hard to become a useful person to our country’s modernization” to self-advancement focused ones like “A bright future awaits you after 4 years at XXX school.”

Today, welcoming slogans targeted at freshmen go extremely personal, which, to a certain extent, shows how much different China’s younger generations are.

“Little fairies, here you come at last.”

“Major in arts. Transform from ugly duckling to beautiful swan.”

“Female juniors, we’ve been waiting for you.”

“The automobile club can provide you with girlfriends, boyfriends, or gay partners.”

“We older sisters are leaving. Will marry to a rich and handsome guy in 3 years.”

“We have few female students on campus. Take caution if you decide to turn homosexual.”

“You are 0. We are 1. Let’s code the world together.” Pun here: in China, 0 usually refers to the “woman” in a male gay couple, and 1 refers to the “man.”

Not everybody is impressed by slogans with such strong style. Many complained that these slogans make universities sound like places for ONS rather than education. Other expressed that they are too old to appreciate such strong character. But the one thing that everybody agrees on is, as one netizen of the post-80s generation commented, “today’s youth are truly different.”
